Lido 14 Measurement

Please read the entire contents of this page.  If you have any questions, please contact the Chief Measurer.

Measurement in the Lido 14 Class
The Lido 14 Class Association defines a set of measurements and rules to insure that a Lido 14 remains compliant to the one-design standard for the Lido 14 sailboat.  The full set of measurements and rules are contained in the text of the Association Bylaws and the Approved Changes list.

The Association uses the "Official Certificate of Measurement and Registration" (aka Measurement Certificate) to show that a Lido 14 passes the principal measurements.  Note that the certificate does not contain all measurements and rules described by the Bylaws and Approved Changes and thus is not the final authority on showing conformance to those measurements and rules.  Once a certificate is complete, it is valid for the life of the boat.  Certificates are transferable to new owners.

As the Bylaws permit numerous changes to the Lido 14, it falls upon the member to note these changes on their certificate and to seek re-measurement when appropriate.

The measurement process:

  1. A Lido 14 owner joins the Association
  2. The new member contacts their local measurer and makes a measurement appointment.
  3. The measurer measures the boat and sails and records the results onto an Official Certificate of Measurement and Registration.  Measurers receive blank certificates from the Association.  Click here for a flowchart of a suggested boat measurement process.
  4. Measurement of sails consists of verifying that an Association royalty tag is affixed and that the sails measure to the requirements listed in the Bylaws.  If the sails meet all the requirements, the measurer, using an Association provided ink stamp, stamps all legal sails, and put their initials and the date onto the stamp mark.  It is preferred that the stamp mark be at the starboard side of the tack of each sail.  Lastly, the measurer makes a log entry for each sail showing the member name, measurement date, sail type, and sail brand.
  5. When all the items shown on the certificate have passed measurement, the measurer signs and dates the certificate.
  6. The certificate is mailed to the Chief Measurer - typically by the measurer.
  7. The Chief Measurer reviews the certificate and records it into a log book if the certificate appears to be complete.  Any discrepancies found will be resolved between the Chief Measurer, the measurer, and the member.
  8. The Chief Measurer signs the certificate and returns it to the member.

Bylaws and Approved Changes
The Association Bylaws and Approved Changes are published annually in the Association's Handbook/Roster.  From time to time the Bylaws are published on this website under the Bylaws subheading of the front page.  The website version is not guaranteed to be current.

Though the Approved Changes is intended only contain ease of use and convenience related changes to the Lido 14, there has always been a number of  items that relate to measurement.  Approved Changes are enacted by a majority vote of the Governing Board and thus can be added, removed, or modified frequently.  Recent Approved Changes are published in the Association newsletter (aka The BowWave).

Official Certificate of Measurement and Registration
The normal Certificates are provided and filled out by Fleet Measurers who, in turn, get them from the Association.  A reference copy (not for official use) is available by clicking the following links.

Class Championship Regatta Measurement Checklist
The Association uses a two stage measurement process for boats attending the Class Championship Regatta.  In addition to having to show a completed Measurement Certificate, registrants must also complete the current Measurement Checklist.  The Checklist is provided in the entry package for the Championships and must be submitted to the organizers of the regatta in order to complete eligibility for racing in the regatta. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a an up to date spot check of the boat's measurements and to avoid on-site measurement - a multi-day affair for most one-design classes.
