A few words about the daily awards for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The three daily awards are Corinthian Spirit, Spirit and Enthusiasm, and Boat of the Day.  On Tuesday, the Boat of the Day was awarded to dad/daughter team of Matt & Maggie Nolan (Seattle, WA) for a spectacular improvement in performance.  They started out the Qualifier Series with a 17th.  After returning from the lunch break, they stormed the Silver Flight with 2 first place finishes.  For that the won the award.

Spirit and Enthusiasm went the daughter/mother team of Ellen and Lenore Collins.  Their starboard side jib cleat parted from the boat so they sailed in, refastened it, and went back out to race.  It came away again.  Rather than quit, mom (Lenore) manually held the jib sheet in place when they were on port tack!

Corinthian Spirit was awarded to dad and son team of Chris and Porter Killian for their rescue of a family at near drowning.  A mom, dad, and daughter had been out on a PWC and all had fallen off and drifted apart and away from each other.  Both the daughter and mom were, apparently, non swimmers and the mom's PFD was slipping off over her head - she was in true peril.  Chris and Ported saw the situation and rescued them!

On Wednesday, the final day of racing, the Boat of the Day was awarded to Kay Sterner and Anna Misenti for their positive attitude about having to carry a large amount of ballast weight.  The two 14 year olds were carrying 50 pounds of ballast to bring their crew weight up to the 300 pound minimum AND they were carrying an additional 13 pounds to bring their boat up to the 310 pound minimum.  This 60+ pounds of ballast, in the form of two gym lifting weights, was so large that it was equal to the weight of one of Kay's friends - so they named the weight after their friend - Georgina - and spoke of Georgina throughout the regatta.  The Corinthian Spirt award was presented to Roger Patterson in recognition for his efforts in organizing the championships while the Spirit and Enthusiasm award was presented to Mark and Sarah Ryan for their perpetual display of exuberance and humor (showing up on Monday dressed as pirates, for example).

Championship Series (Wednesday, August 12)

5:30PM.  Finally found someone to read the printed race scores over the telephone.  These are unofficial, of course.  The top 10 places in Gold and top 5 places in Silver are award winners and are posted below.

The total score represents the total of seven races (the carry over plus 3 on Tuesday plus 3 on Wednesday minus a discard).

Winners of individual races in the Championship Series include Kurt & Anne Wiese in the first race on Tuesday, Stu Robertson & Erin Batchelor in the 2nd race on Tuesday and the 1st and 2nd races on Wednesday.  Steve & Anne Schupak won the 3rd race on Tuesday and Mark & Sarah Ryan won the final race of the Championship Series.

Wednesday 5:10 P.M.  Still no results posted on www.mbyc.org.  What little info is available indicates racing is completed and that racers are putting their boats away but still no meaningful reports on the regatta itself.

Gold/Silver Flight assignments were posted yesterday - Boats 25 thru 47 are in the Silver Flight.  The Qualifying Series results posted below have been augmented to show who is in which flight.

Those racing in the Silver Flight will carry forward their rank in the Silver grouping, not their overall ranking from the Qualifying Series (eg. the first boat in Silver Flight ranking will carry in a 1 into the Championship Series.)

Another part of the Gold/Silver Flight split is that the Class awards a Team Trophy that uses the assignments to create teams.  Each Team is composed of a Gold Flight Team and a Silver Flight Team.  For example, the highest ranking Gold Flight would be paired with the lowest ranking Silver, the 2nd highest with the next to last, and so on.  The scores of these pairs of boats will be added and the "team" with the lowest score wins the trophy.  The goal of this trophy is to provide incentive for the top sailors to take some time to help the sailors in the lower end of the ranks get better - as it's the improvement in the lower ranking team that will usually have the most impact on the team scoring.  Of course, the paired teams don't race together - thus avoiding true team competition on the water (which is not allowed in normal sailboat racing.)

Championship Series (Tuesday, August 11)

Results for the day were never posted on www.mbyc.org.  No racing reports filed either.  The only reports concerned a requests for redress regarding the carry over scoring system (discussed below) and that the Annual Meeting was contentious.  We won't publish any details until facts are checked.

Qualifying Series (Monday, August 10)

The Qualifying Series was sailed today.  Official results haven't been posted but telephone reports have been filtering in.  First, a bit about qualifying series.  In general, the purpose of having a qualifying series is to limit the number of boats on the starting line in the championship series so that the quality of racing and accuracy of race management remains high.  In confined waters such as Mission Bay, it's tough to maintain high quality in races once you get to 25 or so boats (calling OCS boats, for example, becomes difficult).  It's also a challenge for the competitors to sail in large groups because one errant boat can easily "take out" a bunch of others.  Thus the practice of breaking the competitors into groups (aka flights) that are more manageable in size.  In very large regattas (e.g. Naples Sabot Championships), it's common to have 4 or more such groups.  With 47 boats racing, the Lido 14 class is well served with just two groups - Gold and Silver.

In today's series of races, a four way round robin series was used to determine assignments into Gold and Silver.  A four way round robin starts with the race organizers seeding the 47 teams into 4 reasonably equal (in terms of talent) groups - lets call them A, B, C, and D.  Each group races each other group once (i.e. A races B, C races D, and so on).  At the end of the day, everyone has raced everyone in the other groups once and everyone in their own group 3 times.  The raw scores are summed and everyone is ranked 1st thru last - with the top half being assigned to the Gold Flight and the other half to the Silver Flight.

Temperatures were in the low 70's with the sun never breaking thru the marine layer.  Winds were highly variable with 15 degree shifts and significant velocity changes - perhaps from a low of 4 knots to a puffs in the 10 or so knot range.  This put a premium on keeping boats moving forward thru the lulls and hitting the shifts and recognizing the difference between true headers and velocity headers.

Races were sailed in the northern, relatively open, end of Mission Bay.  The races were designed by Stan Betts, a National Race Officer, Lido 14 racer, and member of Mission Bay YC.  Stan used a combination of windward offset mark, leeward gate, upwind finish line above the windward mark, and "dog leg" finish line below the start line (ala Olympic finishing) to help decongest the race course and perhaps add some challenge to those not used to these more sophisticated race course configurations.

The official results for the Qualifying Series are posted here.  With an odd number of entrants, we don't know the exact the Gold/Silver Flight cut-off.  It looks like the Runyans (Portland, OR) are on the cusp.  In past regattas, they would let the cusp team decide if they wanted to go up to Gold or down to Silver.  We'll know tomorrow.

The regatta organizers have specified that each team's rank will be carried forward into the Championship Series as though it were a single championship race.  Officially, this will show up as Race #1 in the Championship Series results.  This form of scoring has been used occasionally in the past to increase the number of races counted towards the final results but it also brings up the issue of placing a high value on the Qualifying Series races - at a time when some racers would prefer to "warm up" to the Championship Series.  The down side is that having an OCS in a qualifying series race will have a dramatic impact - as several boats discovered today - with their rankings well below their "normal" level of sailing.  How these teams cope with that will have to wait until the Championship Series unfolds. Fortunately, there's a Hawaiian style dinner with live music and dancing to help sooth some of the early regatta jitters.

At the 2008 Class Championships in Eugene, Oregon, a new generation of awards to recognize special circumstances and people were presented.  These awards were made daily and are being presented again at this year's championships.  Today the Association recognizes the following:

Corinthian Spirit: Kathy and Tara Muenz (Mother and Daughter) for traveling from Ohio and Georgia respectively to compete, not only in the CCR, but also in the Women’s Lido Championship on Saturday. Their charter boat experienced some breakdowns on Saturday, but they got those taken care of and were out on the course this morning ready to compete.

Spirit and Enthusiasm: Jeff and Dave Pennington (son and father) for travelling from Arizona with their Lido 14 - hull number 46!  Jeff, who is a fireman from Arizona, recently joined the Lido Class Association and is making this his first of many CCRs to come.

Boat of the Day: Paul and John Makielski (father and son) won the Boat of the Day award for a fantastic 9th place finish in the second race. Paul and John will be competing in the Silver Fleet for the Championship Series, and had an outstanding second race with a top ten finish. Paul and John’s boat is known for the orange and yellow flames on either side of the bow!

Youngest Crew: Porter Killian – 9 years old

Youngest combined age for skipper and crew: Kay Sterner/Anna Misenti – 28 years (both skipper and crew are 14 yrs. old)

Women's Championship Regatta

The team of Aimee Heim/Skylar Lee dominated with a four 1st place finishes and one 2nd - besting second place by 10 points.

Mission Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) has hosted the Lido 14 Class Championship eight times prior to 2009, the first being in 1966.  It goes without saying that it's a very popular place to host a Lido 14 regatta, let alone a class championship.  There is plenty of room to race, very good facilities for launching boats, great volunteer support from the club membership, and so on.  The past several MBYC hosted Class Championship Regattas (CCR) have strived set an even higher level of excellence by offering an additional event (never sailed elsewhere) - The Women's Championship Regatta.

To kick off this year's CCR, twelve all-women teams - spanning wide ranges of age and experience - sailed five races on Saturday August 8.  The team of Aimee Heim/Skylar Lee (San Diego, CA) sailed to four 1st place finishes and one 2nd - besting second place by 10 points.  Aimee is most often found sailing in her Snipe or as crew in a Lido 14 along with her husband Eric Heim.  Skippers Kelly Cantley, Terrie Canon, Kathy Reed, Cindy Heavrin, Ellen Collins, Kathy Muenz are regularl Lido 14 skippers and often (if not exclusively) sail with woman crew too.

Sarah Mackey (Seattle, WA), one of our junior sailors, Sarah Ryan (Long Beach, CA), Barbara Williams (San Diego, CA), and Anne Hinton (San Diego, CA) are most often seen racing in the front end of a Lido 14; Sarah Mackey with her dad Jim, Sarah Ryan with her brother Mark Ryan; Barbara and Anne with their husbands Grant and Roger, respectively.  Kathy & Tara Muenz are no doubt our longest distance travelers - they hail from Fleet 57 (Columbus, OH).  We don't know Monica Traylor yet and look forward to learning more about her and her crew Felicity.
