2006 Li'Doheney Outside Regatta and Fleet 73 Championships

Sunday May 21, 2006

Hosted by Dana Point Yacht Club

Jeff McLaren, Steve Shupak, and Chris Killian are the big winners!

It is always a challenge when we race Lido 14’s in venues other than the calm waters inside the harbor. That is one reason this event, held on the waters outside Dana Point Harbor, off of Doheny Beach May 21, 2006 in conjunction with the Doheny Blues Festival, was so well liked by Lido 14 racers. Add music from the festival, a southerly wind, mix in a little chop and swell, and you have a near perfect recipe for a great day on the water.

This year’s event was also the second annual Fleet 73 Championship race, won last year by Jeff McLaren. Five windward/leeward races were run in enough wind/storm chop, swells and eight to fourteen knots of breeze from the south to make it a wet race that was a lot of fun! Ten boats were entered, nine raced, and only one capsized (due to equipment failure). The PRO was reliable Barry Senescu. Race Committee, Committee and Mark-set boats were provided by Dana Point Yacht Club. The chase boat and crew were provided by Larry Wallace.

Jeff McLaren with crew Tony Beltran repeated as the Fleet 73 champs. The winner of A Class and the Chris Magnusson Perpetual Trophy was Steve and Anne Schupak. Chris Killian and crew Joe Ledbetter won B Class. Special thanks to the race volunteers, Barry Senescu, Judy Lakin, Bill Fielder, George Hardy, Larry Wallace and Jerry Williams who made this event so enjoyable.

We hope to see everyone at next year’s event!
