2004 SCYA Midwinter Regatta

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club

Feb. 14 & 15

Stu Robertson gets a win at ABYC and grabs the Tyler Perpetual from defender Chris Collins

Shortly before the first start, a chrome yellow flash behind a Volvo wagon entered the lot at ABYC—brakes screech and the combo stops near the hoist—“Kurt is usually a bit late, but this is a record” someone says.  Kurt and Anne Wiese somehow get launched and to the start on time.  Shortly afterward the new BRIGHT YELLOW 6000 series boat is moving away from the fleet and on to a “sure” win but…. Oops, which side of the committee boat is the finish?  Having not been at the skippers meeting the yellow flash takes the left side while Jenkins and Collins go right (after Kurt and Anne have made the fatal crossing and must unwind for a close third).  In race three a large (70+ feet) schooner enters the turning basin right after the A fleet start.  Stu narrowly escapes to the weather side while Carroll and the Wiese family get separately tangled up in the mizzen boom on the lee side--both narrowly missing capsize and/or dismasting.

Saturday night another gala burger fest was hosted by Stu and Bonnie Robertson with a significant contingent of Lidos and race committee folks gorging themselves on , munchies, barbecue, and booze.  All party bums returned to the racecourse the next day, but Bob Yates broke his tiller before the start and packed it in early.

Sunday morning, newcomer Eric Bohman from revived fleet 43 (Anacapa YC) grabbed first honors.demonstrating surprising speed and skill (betcha he’s sailed before) but had a breakdown which got him started late in the second race.  Greg Rodgers got in stride for the final races with 2 bullets and finished up fifth for the regatta

In the B fleet locals John Bergan the Eberlys and Tracy Conn swapping wins.  Old hand Tracy Conn eventually posted 3 bullets on Sunday to capture the gold.  (just one more B sign up and Tracy would have moved to the A fleet).  Better luck next time guys—recruit a couple more B’s and you all can move up a notch.
