HUNTINGTON LAKE -- Unlike a day earlier, final day of the first weekend of the 49th annual High Sierra Regatta went off without a hitch Sunday.

Thirteen classes of sail boats, each starting 5 minutes apart from the previous class, took to Huntington Lake for one race -- the longest of the weekend -- that stretched about 10 miles.

And with a typical wind blowing around 8-10 knots -- an element that was missing early Saturday and nearly forced the postponement of that day's races -- each class crowned a winner, several of whom had local ties.

"It was a medium wind, not too hard, but not like [Saturday] either," said Deborah Reitz, High Sierra Regatta's chairman. "It turned out to be a good day for racing."

Mike Checketts of Fresno won the Multihull class.

Kirk Twardowski won the International 14, and George Pedrick beat fellow Alameda resident Glenn Hansen in the 29er class.

Former Olympic sailing champion Allison Jolly won the Fireball class.

In the Ultimate 20, John Andrew was first, as was Craig Lee in the Banshee class.

Fresno's Dave Keran won the DaySailer A, and Ann Dingerson won the DaySailer B.

In the San Juan 21, Richard Kahn (Fresno) finished ahead of Ruth Barcus (Tollhouse), Jerry Hansen (Kerman) and Waine Aalto (Fresno), who were second through fourth, respectively.

Jim Schmidt won the Catalina 22, and Brady Sih and Rich Osborne won the Lido A and Lido B classes, respectively.
