2000 Seattle One
Design/Keelboat Series (SOCKS)/Lido 14 Western Regional Championships
May 20/21, 2000
Sponsored by Seattle Yacht
Club
Saturday the 20th
saw light to medium breeze coming from a generally southerly direction. Four races were sailed back to back with all
being windward/leeward configurations.
The tides were fairly typical and ranged up to about 10’ in height
change which left little recourse through out the series but to sail “left” to
the shoreline to find less current.
Sunday the 21st
saw far heavier winds, reported as 18 knots steady. It was apparent that the wind and chop that it produced were just
beyond the limits of many Lido 14’s and fewer boats starting demonstrated that. One boat lost its mast just prior to race 5
(1st of the day), another capsized after Race 5. Again, windward/leeward courses were
prescribed, which made for additional “fun” going dead downwind in a following
sea with puffs of wind above 18 knots.
The big story of the event
happened in Race 6. Joe Daubenberger
got off to a great start and lead to the weather mark. John Papadopoulos was second around by about
10 boat lengths. Going down wind, John
pressed a bit too hard to catch Joe and capsized. Given that a throw out wasn’t provided unless 7 or more races
were sailed and the reduced Lido 14 fleet, it looked like Race 6 would be the
last of the series and all Joe had to do to win the regatta (now that John was
apparently out of the race) was to finish.
John realized this and started racing again with a full boat load of
water (having righted their Lido14 after a few minutes of pondering what to
do). But John’s boat, or more
appropriately, his mast, couldn’t take the strain of the wind. A spreader broken and the mast snapped in to. So Joe’s win looked certain. That is, until a rivet on one of his diamond
stays blew out, leaving him with little choice to retire before his mast broke
like John’s. Apparently he wasn’t aware
of the point scoring situation because he packed up the sails and got a tow
in. Thus, with both Joe and John
getting DNF’s for Race 6, the regatta remained in John’s hands.
This event also served as
the Western Regional Championships. The
defending champion was and continues to be the team of John Papadopoulos and
Stephanie Faillers.
The races were conducted by
Corinthian Yacht Club race management staff.
All racing was out on Pugest Sound in Shilshole Bay.
