Lido 14 Fleet 1 – Newport Harbor ~ 2000 Fleet Championship Regatta ~ Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club

June 11, 2000. Sailed in the “Turning Basin”. Sunny. Light to medium winds from about 210 degrees magnetic.

Mark Gaudio won his 4^th fleet championship in the last 5 years, defeating the 1998 and 1999 Class Champions along the way. Take a closer look at the individual race scores and you’ll see a different story, however. Going into the 5^th and final race, the team of John Papadopoulos and Stephanie Faillers were handily winning the event with a total of 8 points followed by Mark Gaudio/Dustin Arnold with 12 points. John and Stephanie, having recently won the Western Regional Championships in Seattle, WA and two bullets at the BYC Twilights on the Wednesday, were clearly in top form with finishes of 4, 2, 1, and 1. They consistently hit the critical shifts, avoided the boat traffic, sailed in pressure and clear lanes. But alas, the magic spell was broken just a little bit earlier than hoped. Just after the gun went off for the 5^th race and final race, John’s forestay came uncoupled from the forestay adjuster. A ring-ding had failed or fallen off or who knows what. By the time the forestay was reattached with a spare clevis pin, the fleet was too far gone to catch up to. No throw outs left no room for error so John and Stephanie had to settle for 4^th overall.
